CLOUDLINUX 6.9 xen pv [***] v68.0.33 (enrolled on Kernelcare).

I run #needs-restarting and it reports:

1 : /sbin/init

How do we safely restart this service or can we only do a full server restart please?

You can try to run # telinit u, or # init u, will restart init without affecting the rest of the system.

But could you please let us know, what exactly was done before you've got this suggestion? Was it the KernelCare update?

Hi there. My system is also showing init as requiring reboot. This happened overnight possibly during an automatic update on whm server.

I have tried init u and telinit u and service is still saying it requires restart.

There is really never any compelling reason to use init 6 instead of reboot, unless:

For some reason you are missing the reboot executable, or
You are deliberately trying to avoid notifying users that the system is going down.
reboot (so long as you don't run reboot --force) is actually the "softer" way to shut down.
